When money stops being the obstacle 💰

When money stops being the obstacle 💰

During my last Big Money, Big Mindset webinar, I shared a version of the wheel of life with DWG students. It’s a simple visual that maps out the core areas we all juggle: health, relationships, career, finances, personal growth, and more. The aim? To find some kind of balance across all of them.

I know, easier said than done, right? We certainly sign up for a lot in this game of life!

Each of these areas matters, but today I want to focus on one that has a surprising ripple effect on the rest: your finances. Because when money feels stable, secure and abundant, everything else becomes easier.

We’ve all heard the saying, money doesn’t buy happiness. While that’s true to an extent (in that your general outlook and attitude will translate to other areas of your life), I don’t fully agree that money can’t buy happiness.

Why?

Because money buys time. And time gives you freedom. And that, in my view, is what so many people are really chasing.

The truth is, we’re not encouraged to see wealth as something attainable, and most people didn’t grow up having open conversations about money. We may not have been taught how to build wealth, manage money, make investments, or see the opportunities that are out there. In fact, many of us internalised some version of:

It’s hard to get ahead – just accept it

You work till retirement, that’s just how it goes

Just survive, don’t expect more

And these are just some of the narratives that are imposed on us! But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to stay that way.

In my experience, when you start working on your financial mindset, learning about money, and seeing the results of your efforts, all the other areas on this wheel of life begin to thrive.

Let’s break this down:

  • Personal growth and fulfillment: If you’ve ever had to walk away from an idea or a pursuit that excites you simply because your bank balance said ‘Nope’, you’ll know how frustrating that feels. Wealth removes these blocks, giving you the freedom to say yes to the things that align with your passions and ambitions.
  • Health and wellness: Stress about money is one of the biggest contributors to poor mental and physical health. When financial worries dominate your thoughts, your body often pays the price. You could be doing everything right – going to the gym, eating well, getting in your 10,000 steps – but if you’re constantly worried about making ends meet, your nervous system remains in overdrive.
  • Social and friendships: Financial freedom means you can spend quality time with loved ones, enjoy new experiences, and be generous without stress. You may even find that you attract people who inspire, uplift, and expand your thinking. I know for me, once I created wealth, my social circle widened dramatically. It wasn’t something I sought; it just happened. Wealth gave me access to people I never imagined connecting with, and they constantly inspire me.
  • Family and personal life: Having stability, and being in charge of your time is a gamechanger. But sadly, many people don’t even know what it feels like, to have true freedom over their time. This is the biggest gift wealth can give us. So many are exhausted by the treadmill of life, but when you create wealth, time expands, because your time is truly your own.
  • Career and education: What would you really do if money wasn’t the main driver? Would you switch careers? Start a business? Study something new? When your finances are strong, your decisions don’t have to be based on survival.
  • Legacy and impact: When you have financial abundance, you can give more generously, support causes you care about and help your loved ones. Wealth gives you the means to have a greater positive impact on the world and create something that outlives you.

The bottom line

Money isn’t something to push away (either consciously or subconsciously). It’s a tool that enables a richer, more fulfilling life. And the more you create, the more you can share. This is why I encourage people to prioritise wealth creation, rather than turning away from it. In my opinion, mastery over our finances is one of the greatest gifts we can ever give ourselves and our loved ones.
