In a bull market, it’s easy to become fixated on getting the most bang for your investment buck. But I encourage you right now to remove any expectations of perfect timing.

Why?

Because it’s rare to find an investor who consistently sells at the peak of the market. Even the pros don’t get it right all the time! I can safely say that setting that expectation for yourself will only end in tears.

A better approach? Take profits by DCA at multiple stages of the journey. You’ll still achieve a great result, even if you don’t hit the absolute peak of the mountain. Plus you’ll save yourself a whole lot of stress in the process.

How’s your crypto journey going? If this is your first market cycle, I’m sure you’ve found it a roller-coaster ride!

After all the volatility, I want to share a message of hope with you.

Believe it or not, we are still on track for the bull market of 2024!

Why do I think this?

Because I believe we’ve hit what’s known as ‘the bottoming’ AKA the bottom of a particular market cycle. It’s when the price hits the floor and the sentiment hits an absolute depression phase.

Are you feeling it?

However, the thing about the depression phase is that it’s actually good news.

If we take a look at each previous crypto market cycle, we can see that the bottoming always happens 750-1,000 days after a Bitcoin halving event, (watch YouTube videos on this if you’re not sure what it is).

While some have speculated that Bitcoin would go down to US$14K, I personally believe we’ve already hit the bottom (triggered by the FTX fiasco) and that $14k is not going to happen now.

So what comes after the bottoming?

Historically, a 150 day rally! We’ve seen it play out in 2012, 2016 and 2020. As you can imagine, this is very bullish news.

After 150 days, we usually see the price drop for a short period of time, then it goes sideways for approximately 3-6 months. I believe we’re currently in that period right now.

And then? We’ll see a 3-6 month rally, before we start the cycle again.

If you’re wondering how I know this, the answer is simple; these cycles are a normal part of crypto investing. In fact, they’re so well-known they’ve been epitomised in this chart called the Wall Street Cheat Sheet.

The chart demonstrates just how predictably volatile the market is, and that fluctuations are all part of the game. The euphoric state (where all your coins are going to the moon) is actually the point of maximum financial risk. The ‘anger and depression’ phase where are are now is the point of maximum financial opportunity.

Understanding the psychology of market cycles will help ease your mind when the market does its thing. Because if you can master your emotions, and use logic and education to override fear, you master the crypto game.

Whilst nothing is set in stone, the historical data can provide us with a tentative timeline of how this will all play out:

June 2023 – we saw the start of 3-6 month sideways movement.

January 2024 – we see upward movement as we prepare for the Bitcoin Halving

Mid 2024 – the moment we’ve all been waiting for – the next major bull market!

Remember, crypto is impermanent in every aspect. It’s never going to stay where it is for eternity. If you’ve come this far, you just need to wait a little while longer. Have patience, sit back and watch the game play out. I promise it will be worth the wait.

Would you think I was crazy if I said we could:

Borrow money without a bank or broker

Take out a loan with 0% interest

Produce that loan within minutes

Never have to use a house as collateral, supply ID or submit paperwork ever again

Because the truth is, we CAN do all of this. And we can do it right now.

And what’s more, it’s completely safe and legal.

This is decentralised finance, commonly referred to as DeFi.

In DeFi, we don’t have to rely on our centralised banking system because, in DeFi, we are our own bank.

There are so many things the DeFi space opens for us, and I’m going to be covering them all in a series of emails throughout the year. But for this first deep dive, I’ll be focusing on DeFi lending, to give you a bit of a flavour of what’s possible when we move beyond the legacy financial system we’re currently in.

We’ll be looking at:

The differences between centralised and decentralised finance

The benefits of DeFi Lending

How does it all work

Are there any risks involved

How you can invest in DeFi

So, if you’ve wanted to learn more about this sector or simply want to know what all the fuss is about, this is the email for you.

Let’s jump in!

DeFi vs CeFi – key differences

To understand DeFi, let’s first look at Centralised Finance (CeFi), which is how traditional finance works.

With CeFi, there’s a central governing body, such as a bank, looking after our funds. This comes with certain safeguards, but it also comes with restrictions too. For instance, we can only access a set amount of our money at a time, we need permission to do certain things, and in extreme cases, we can be locked out of our own accounts.

And let’s not forget the paperwork…

Dealing with banks requires lengthy application and assessment processes and constantly having to validate our identity.

Exhausting!

DeFi, on the other hand, has no central governing body or institution. The ownership is distributed between many people, so it can’t be shut down like a centralised system can. DeFi is not subject to the rules, regulations or whims of one controlling authority, and we can transact without ever having to deal with a bank or broker.

Essentially, it takes out the middleman and gives the power back to us.

It’s worth mentioning that anything we can do in CeFi, we can also do in DeFi (often much cheaper and a whole lot quicker). We can:

Earn yield

Store money in cryptographically secured vaults (the blockchain)

Transfer money overseas / across jurisdictions

Hold money in a wallet

Borrow, lend, trade, sell and move money around

And we do it all peer to peer.

I believe DeFi has the potential to completely revolutionise how we borrow and lend money. And it’s not something that’s happening in the distant future, it’s happening right now.

With all the turbulence in the market, I thought it was timely to revisit one of the core principles of crypto and blockchain technology. Which is this:

Cryptocurrencies were created to cut out the middleman and prevent the need for a centralised authority controlling our funds.

As you know, banks and governments have had the monopoly over the production and distribution of our hard-earned cash for decades.

And I think we can all agree – this is not exactly ideal.

The good news is, crypto gives us another option.

With crypto, and particularly Decentralised Finance (DeFi) we can transact independently of these institutions and avoid third party or counter party risk. The term for this is ‘trust-less’.

On the other hand, Centralised Finance (CeFi) exchanges, such as FTX, Coinspot, Binance etc, require us to place a certain amount of trust in them in exchange for the convenience of using their platform (trusted third party / middleman).

Now the truth is, we do actually need these exchanges as they provide the only current way to get our dollars in and out (dollar on and off ramp). When you think about it, this is the same as the current banking system we’re trying to be free of.

We need to remember that while our money is sitting on these exchanges, it’s under their control, not ours. So, I recommend making sure you only have a ‘light touch’ with them. By that I mean, deposit your money, make your transactions, then move your crypto into your own wallet (where you own the private keys) immediately afterwards.

Using centralised exchanges is not the issue. Keeping large amounts of crypto or cash on them is.

I’ll be exploring this further and talking about security and private wallets in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!

Dollar Cost Averaging (DCA) is an investment strategy that mitigates the volatility Crypto is known for. When you DCA, you commit to investing a certain amount into Crypto at regular intervals, regardless of price or market conditions. It takes away the stress of trying to time the market.

And removing stress and emotions in Crypto is always a good thing!

Let’s be honest, we’d all love to buy low and sell high, but until we get our hands on a crystal ball, adopting sensible, long-term strategies for building our Crypto wealth is key.

So, how do we do it? Here are a couple of options:

Method 1:
An easy way to get started is to automate your DCA through a crypto exchange. Many exchanges now offer a DCA function where you simply set up your regular investment amount and frequency (e.g., $50 each week into your coin of choice) and you’re good to go. The exchange will automatically buy your preferred dollar amount on a set day each week. This is a great option for those who do not have a lump sum of capital ready to invest.

(Hot tip: When choosing this option, we suggest moving your crypto once per month into your own wallet, so you don’t have your fortune sitting on an exchange).

Method 2:
This one is a bit more involved.

Take the amount of capital you wish to invest (let’s say you have $5,000) and rather than investing as a lump sum, you break it up and invest it in smaller instalments over time. This method gives you a bit more flexibility, so if you think you’re onto a good thing (or you’ve managed to procure that crystal ball), you can stop your DCA whenever you like and invest the rest in a lump sum.

Whichever way you choose, DCA removes the temptation of timing the market and avoids making counter-productive decisions out of greed or fear.

So go in smart and start your DCA today.
